Cameos in the Proverbs: The Sluggard
Proverbs 6:6-11

Solomon introduces us here to this tragi-comedy figure called the sluggard, or idle man, or lazy man.

What profit is there to bring this person to center stage this morning?

Much--because of the frequency with which he is mentioned. Also because slothfulness is recognized as one of the seven deadly sins of the soul, and our Lord mentions it as one of the chief enemies of the soul.

Slothfulness is that which measures the distance between what you ought to be and what you actually are. It shows the difference between the person you are and the person you could be.

I. The Marks of the Slothful Man.

1.    He does the right thing at the wrong time.

2.    He needs someone to stand over him.

3.    He will not start things. (Prov. 6:9)

4.    He will not finish things either.

5.    It is very hard for him to face things. (Prov. 20:4; 22:13)

II. The Making of the Slothful Man.

1.   His wants are fulfilled without personal effort. (Prov. 21:25)

2.    He seeks for the job that is easy. (Prov. 24:30)

3.    He now tries to escape his employer. (Prov. 13:4)

4.   He seeks new employment.  Every job is temporary, menial and manual labor are quite beneath his capabilities.

5.   He can never admit that he is wrong (Prov. 26:16)
